Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program

The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) is a voluntary land-retirement program that helps agricultural producers protect environmentally sensitive land, decrease erosion, restore wildlife habitat, and safeguard ground and surface water. More than 20,000 acres have been enrolled in the state of Virginia, while Rappahannock County landowners have signed 42 contracts enrolling 825 acres. Riparian buffers are one of the major tools for reducing agricultural pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. Landowners receive rental payments for land taken out of production and financial assistance to establish the buffer.

Find out more about CREP by contacting your local Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Cooperative Extension Service or the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District.
